Embracing the power of water in times of turmoil

The recent floods that have plagued parts of Vermont have been impactful, leaving some deep imprints in our close knit communities.

As we bear witness to the power of water, we are reminded of its paradoxical nature and in that, can see ancient Chinese wisdom playing out in our lives, right now, in 2023.

In the realm of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each element found in nature holds great significance; fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. The energy of these elements have distinct behaviors and patterns of expression that can be seen throughout the natural world. Chinese medicine holds that the internal environment of our bodies is subject to those same natural laws as we each are but a microcosm of the planet.

Water, as as an elemental force, evokes images of gentle movement, nourishment, ease. This when it’s functioning in balance with other elements within the system. The converse is a state of disease, and in this disharmony we experience the destructive power of water which, we’ve seen, is a force to be reckoned with.

In our body - the water element is associated with our kidneys (KD) and bladder (BL). These organs work in dynamic together and play a significant role in managing fluid metabolism in our body. When in balanced relationship, we have no symptoms. However, when these organs are out of right relationship this can look like - frequent or urgent urination, voiding several times in the night, urinary tract infections, frequent loose stools, fertility issues and a propensity to feeling very cold. Emotionally, water is tied to fear, meaning trauma and shock will directly impact the function of these organs. Some of these symptoms are quite intuitive, following our logical path of thinking. But others, I image, not so much - we don’t often associate digestive function, reproductive health or emotions with and kidney and bladder function. This speaks to the intricacies of these elemental relationships within our bodies and to the environment.

At Latitude Acupuncture and Wellness, we strive to foster a space where ancient wisdom meets modern living, providing tools and resources that empower you on your wellness journey. We encourage you to seek solace in the calming presence of water, finding inspiration in its ability to adapt, purify, and restore. May this turbulent chapter serve as a reminder of our resilience and the transformative power that lies within each of us.
